  • These figures do not include direct-grant grammar schools which continued outside the maintained sector after the 1944 Act.


Key dates 
1944Education Act
Introduced the tripartite system at secondary level: grammar, technical and secondary modern. Also introduced the 11-plus examination.
School Standards and Framework Act
No new maintained grammar schools can be opened and existing schools cannot introduce new selection by ability.
